Scoring a fashion internship is no easy task. The truth is, so many people want a career in fashion and there aren’t always enough jobs to go around. Stylists, designers, buyers, magazine editors, and fashion bloggers are bombarded with emails everyday with people begging to work for them. So how do you get your email to stand out from the crowd? We have 5 tips to help you score an internship in fashion.
Do your research
I can’t tell you how many potential interns we’ve interviewed that have had no idea what they are even interviewing for! Seriously, do your research. Learn all you can about the company and the person you want to work for. Just doing this puts you miles ahead of the crowd.
Personalize your approach
People know a generic/ copy and paste email when they see one. Do something creative. One of our best interns created a bar graph to display her varying degrees of awesomeness at specific tasks. That resume stood out, got her the interview, and the job.
Follow-up
If you don’t get a response from your first email, follow-up or as we like to call it at School of Style “politely stalk” your potential employer. Often times emails get lost in the shuffle, a polite follow-up will put your resume at the top of heap.
Nail the interview
When it comes to interviewing for an internship position, we already know you don’t have a ton of experience (that’s why you intern, to gain experience) so we want to be wowed in other areas. Dress professionally, arrive on time, smile, and bring a positive attitude. Those seemingly simple actions are actually even more important than your set of skills.
Send a thank you
Mind your manners and always send a thank you note. Call us old fashioned but a handwritten thank you note is never a bad idea. If you don’t know their address, an email thank you will do.
